Venturing into uncharted space

It’s hard to believe that it’s 40 years since Stanley Kubrick’s seminal film “2001: A Space Odyssey” was released. For those of us in the world of local governance, there are considerable uncertainties about how the next year or so will pan out – whether it’s the effects of the global economic downturn, climate change and Copenhagen or the prospect of a new government.

The Policy Network feels that the need for listening to diverse views on the direction of policy, discussion and networking has never been greater, hence our theme for our annual event this year. We have a wealth of speakers from across the world of politics, academia, business and third sectors to help give some shape to the future direction of our work, including:

John Andrew
BBC Local Government Correspondent

Rita Greenwood
Formerly Director of Finance and Commerce, London Borough of Havering

Nicky Hughes
Head of Government Relations, London 2012

Richard Kemp
Liberal Lead, LGA

Mark Stevenson
Director, Government and Public Sector, Performance Improvement Consulting, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP

Susan White
Professor of Social Work, Lancaster University

Kay Fletcher
Social Worker, Barnsley Council Children's Services

Alexis Rowell
Chair, Camden Council all-party Sustainability Task Force

The event will also include a series of parallel seminars drawn from the following topics:

  • New to policy
  • Social media
  • Scrutiny of partners and councillor call for action
  • Performance management: The next generation
  • Wellbeing and happiness
  • Innovation
  • Value for money and efficiency
  • Digital inclusion
  • After dark: The night time economy
  • The Equality Bill and the public sector
  • Preventing and tackling child poverty
  • Positive engagement of older people
  • Making connections: Empowerment and sustainable communities
  • Strategic commissioning
  • Better outcomes for people and places
  • Raising economic prosperity through partnerships
  • Cutting red tape
  • Using the Olympic games to encourage communities to be more active
  • New policy agenda for local services

This event is open to all. It is ideal for experienced policy officers as well as those new to policy, whether you are in the corporate centre or a service department, and participants normally include many first timers together with regular attendees. It consistently gets excellent feedback from participants who like its friendly networking environment as well as the relevant content.
